It's nearly eleven,  I would really like to go to bed now.  But there's this noise outside.  No clue what it is, but it's high-pitched, somewhat distressed-sounding, and damned unsettling.  It could be a puppy (dog or coyote, late May is late enough for coyote pups, right?) caught in brambles or fallen down a hole.  More likely, it's a screech owl.  I don't know, I'm bad with animal calls even under textbook situations.  All I know is that it's fairly distant, did I mention disturbing?, and it's way too hot  so there's no way I'm going to close my windows just to keep noise out.

The noise stopped while I was writing this.  But now I'm all awake again.  I'd go read in bed (I've just started Pretty Maids All In A Row), but then my lamp will get a swarm of those teeny little fly-thingies around it, and then I'll never get to sleep because there are a bunch of nasty little bitey bugs chewing on me.  Crap.  I didn't want to read fanfic on the computer tonight!

We have a fox in our 'hood that has a high pitched, disturbing bark kind of sound. The first time I heard it was wig-o-rama, but now I'm used to it. Gets the dogs all pissed off......

Hmm... Yeah, it could have been a fox. We've got a vixen and kits nearby, but I don't remember having ever heard them bark, so that's not where my brain went. The main reasons for the wiggins were a) Not knowing what it was and b) my mind subconsciously registered it as the sound of something needing rescue. I'm certain I'll get used to it if it keeps up; at the end of the night, it's no creepier than when the coyote pack sings.
