Tale of a Frustrated (lazy) Browncoat
Apr. 9th, 2006 09:58 amAs in a credit-accumulating, signal-spreading, Browncoat website member. I wasn't particularly hardcore, but I had over 2000 credits when the site went down a few months ago. Which I didn't get to spend, BTW, as I had been saving up for a Serenity patch (3000 credits), and the disabling of the website took me by surprise, so... not even a pair of chopsticks.
It gets worse. I was also part of a crew, The Hitchhikers. One of the big crew challenges was a scavenger hunt: 50 credits to the whole crew for every item found, another 500 for the complete set. I had most of the things on the list right at my fingertips. I even had the picture of me and the toy dinosaur uploaded to my hard drive. Orange hat, Hawaiian shirt... I even know someone who has a dulcimer. Did I send anything off to the Captain? Hell no. Other than the dino pic, I didn't even take out the camera.
Why am I telling you this now? Well, for one thing, I didn't have my LJ then (which means that I didn't grab any of the icons they had posted, gorram it). But mostly because of another challenge that I didn't finish. There was a writing challenge, to write the news report of the first ever recorded encounter with Reavers. I twiddled my thumbs for a bit, then was hit by inspiration (ie, the entire story leaped into my brain fully-formed at some odd hour of the morning). I got halfway through, then was again struck, this time with a case of "I know what I want to say, how do I say it?" that lasted until past the deadline. I gave up. But as per usual, I didn't delete the Word file. Now that I have a place to post the thing (hurray for LJ!), I have decided to finish it. I'm hoping that by telling other people about this, I'll have enough incentive to actually do that. I'm going to need it, it's a short enough fic that I didn't make any notes, and I don't know how much of the story still lives in my head.
